Rob McHaffie was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1978, and lives and works in Castlemaine, Victoria.
McHaffie has held regular solo exhibitions with Darren Knight Gallery since 2006. His practice includes painting, drawing and ceramic portraiture of characters, both real and imagined, engaging with themes of personal healing, family life, human relationships and the foibles of contemporary times.
In 2024 McHaffie's work was the subject of a major survey exhibition, Rob McHaffie: We are Family at Bendigo Art Gallery, following Rob McHaffie: This is Living, at Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre, Melbourne in 2018.
In 2026 Buxton Intl. published a monograph of McHaffie's work, Do Paintings Get Jealous of Windows: Rob McHaffie, designed by Tristan Ceddia and Tric and edited by Luisa Bosci with texts by Charlotte Day, Amelia Wallin and Lisa Radford.
He has been the recipient of multiple awards and residencies and has undertaken major commissions including the Costa Georgiadis Portrait Commission for the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra in 2025 and Feathers in the wind 2022, an interactive digital art wall at Bendigo Law Courts, Victoria.
His work is held in public collections in Australia including the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Ian Potter Museum of Art, The University of Melbourne, Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne, City of Stonnington Collection, Melbourne, Bayside City Council Collection, Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.
